CineSeeds

Our CineSeeds program aims to empower the next generation of human rights leaders through education, skills training and access to industry mentors and young leaders in the Arts and Human Rights sectors.

Through educational materials, film screenings and a one-day Youth Summit, CineSeeds brings together 12-25 year olds from all over Victoria to learn from experts, participate in interactive workshops, and experience the ‘stories that matter’ through film, literature, virtual reality and games.

Professional Learning and Teaching Resources

Look through our full suite of teaching resources, a series of videos and lesson plans on different human rights topics. These materials are designed to equip primary and secondary school teachers to use film to teach their students about human rights. Each lesson plan includes one or two engaging short film resources for use in the classroom.

Introducing Human Rights

In our video interview with David Burke from the Human Rights Law Centre and Introduction to Human Rights lesson plans we give an overview of the concept and history of human rights. The lesson plans introduce human rights to students particularly those associated with asylum seekers and refugees using the animation films Dear Habib and North Star Fading as a way of diving deeper into the concepts and ideas surrounding human rights.

We recommend starting with these lesson plans before moving on to the other topics below, but it's totally up to you.

The Rights of the Child

In this video and lesson plan we examine the human rights of children under the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities, particularly how it is applicable in schools. Using two local short films to discuss children’s human rights, Ali and the Long Journey to Australia and This is Yarra.

Guests speakers in the video include Ali and the Long Journey to Australia Producer Lara McKinley, Co-writer Mervi Kaukko, Noble Park Primary Principal David Rothstadt and Kylie Smith from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

Also check out the short video made by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission with Wellington Secondary College about human rights here.

Indigenous Rights

In this video and lesson plan we explore Aboriginal literacy and cultural rights, using the short narrative film Brown Paper Bag.

In the video we are joined by celebrated author, performer and poet Boori Monty Pryor to discuss the power of storytelling.

The lesson plan draws out how Victoria’s Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities protects the distinct cultural rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria.

The Rights of People Living with Disability

Responding to the short narrative film Shakespeare in Tokyo, the last video and lesson plan in the series explores the rights and representation of people living with disabilities, including the importance of a person-centred approach.

In the video artist Kate Disher-Quill and disability advocate Tash Swingler discuss the reality of living with disability and how the Disability Discrimination Act aims to protect people across Australia from unfair treatment in many areas of public life.
